Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1910, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis

Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1920 orchestral version, The Lark Ascending

Gustav Holst, 1916, The Planets (Op.32)

Gustav Holst, 1927, Egdon Heath (Op.47)

Carl Orff, 1935, Carmina Burana - and what a contrast with the last piece - a particularly good rendition this one...

Joaquín Rodrigo, 1939, Concierto de Aranjuez. This is the wonderful Xuefei Yang on guitar. Apologies for the lack of video but I wanted Xuefei's playing and the video versions were only of single movements.

Remo Giazotto, 1958, The so-called Albinoni Adagio in G minor. Giazotto was the biographer of Baroque composer Albinoni. On publishing this Adagio in 1958, Giazotto claimed that it was based on "Two Thematic Ideas and on a Figured Bass by Tomaso Albinoni". However, the musicologists are of the opinion that it is essentially a Giazotto composition with little Albinoni input. So, here it is in my 20th century listing. Personally, it sounds nothing like a Baroque piece to me. I'd put it squarely in the Romantic. In any case, if I'd written this there's no way I'd want to give the credit elsewhere...

Henryk Gorecki, 1976, 3rd Symphony (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) - Op.36

Philip Glass, 1987, 1st Violin Concerto - Op.36. Apologies for the horrible video. I might try to find a better one at another time.

Sir John Tavener, 1988, The Protecting Veil

Karl Jenkins, 2000, The Armed Man
