Kirk Fletcher & band (top); Mud Morganfield & band (bottom)

Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival, 16-19 March 2017: Kirk Fletcher / Mud Morganfield

Kirk Fletcher, blues guitarist extraordinaire, did not disappoint. He has recently been touring with Joe Bonamassa. Mud Morganfield is Muddy Waters son and is the spitting image. He has the presence and the style, all right, but I'm not sure what esle. He's rather living on his father's legacy.

James Sherlock (organist)

Wotton Concert Series, St Mary's Church, Wotton-under-Edge, 4th February 2017: Heroic Music for Organ and Brass - Absolute Brass Ensemble and James Sherlock on organ. This went down a storm, including with me. Brass instruments normally play second fiddle, so to speak, in an orchestra, so it was a treat to give them a virtual monopoly for the night. The big brass sound was perfectly matched by the collosal noise of the St Mary's organ, played as I have never heard it played before by James Sherlock. He said he was suffering from a cold, but it did not affect his performance. The St Mary's organ, may I remind you, was a gift from King George 1st, having previously been in St Martin's in the Field, London, where it was reputedly played by Handel himself. Music by John Gardner, Giovanni Gabrielli, JS Bach, Handel, Brahms, Mahler, Widor and Saint-Saens. Great night. I hope they repeat this combination.
